The 1950s!
The Civil Rights Movement
African Americans had been fighting against racial discrimination for hundreds of years. However, during the 1950's the struggle against racism and segregation entered the American life.In 1954 the Brown vs. Board of Education case was held and the Supreme Court declared that separation of education for blacks were unequal. Many Southern whites disagreed with this and withdrew their children from public schools and enrolled them in all white academies. In 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a city bus to a white person. This started a 13 month boycott of the city's buses by the black citizens. This ended when the bus companies ended discrimination against African American passengers. This boycott was an example of nonviolent resistance which helped shape the civil rights movement.
